Qualifications or Experience

One critical issue in the academe nowadays is the requirement that soon all teachers in college should have at least a master's degree.  Tertiary teachers who have been in the  profession for more than twenty years are required to take master of arts (MA)  or master of science (MS) or else they will have to go.

One contention is that should they be replaced by  new teachers who have MA / MS degrees  but with very limited years of practice? Or with those aspiring teachers who may already have PhDs but had a hard time passing the professional licensure  exam in their professions?

What is ideal of course, is to have teachers with the qualifications and the experience to teach in college.  A nursing teacher with advance degrees in the nursing profession plus considerable number of years in practice. For how can a nursing professor teach the students to become nurse practitioners  if he himself does not have enough clinical practice? Or how can a nursing professor teach effectively if he does not have deeper understanding of the concepts, theories and paradigms in nursing?

Sometimes its futile to even talk about such an issue.

But what should the colleges and universities do  to the oldies who do not have advance training and/or degrees?

I guess they have to find a way to level the playing field.

Aying -Bheng - Bong - Dots

could have been spelled ABBA --my favorite pop group in the 70s;
but in place of another A is D which stands for Dots

A is for Aying, the statistician  and the youngest addition to the NTTCHP faculty
he is  known for his generosity;
he fills NTTCHP tummies with  lots of treats
just beware, says Claire, when he gets lost and stares-
don't lose your faith - for  he is in the idea brooding state.


B is for Bheng.
According to Mandy, Bheng is a silent millionaire
Blessed with  a responsible  husband and 3 girls who  dream to  be just as successful as her man
No doubt she's a dedicated woman who puts family first;
Stay on the shelves you books, shhush you library users!
(and of course, i just made up that joke!)


B is for Bong
the John Loyd of NTTCHP according to his fans
he is friendly yet mysterious at the same time
what he is always in a hurry of, i do not know--
but I bet he is always hitting the road for somebody he adores.


D is for Dots
the lively, most alive woman of NTTCHP
for DOTS redundancy is not a crime
 for when she laughs and giggles,you will literally see the whole of her --body mind and soul--
really laugh and giggle.

Free Seminar : Teaching and Learning Strategies in OBE

The National Teacher Training Center for the Health Professions (NTTCHP) will again resume its monthly seminar on February 23, 2015 at 1:30 pm  to 3:30 pm at the Joaquin Gonzales Hall at UP Manila, Padre Faura Street, Manila.  This month's seminar is  a continuation of the Outcome-based Education lecture series and will center on Teaching and Learning Strategies. Professor Elizabeth Grageda will be the speaker.

The seminar is free of charge but if you want a certificate of attendance, you will have to come earlier and pay the certificate fee of PhP 75.00.

The People Behind NTTCHP 8th NatCon Plus 4

These are the people who had put the NTTCHP 8th NatCon together. The preparation started from October last year, knitting together the bits and pieces slowly, and then speeding up to the last minute. The pressure was kinda crazy, but  I can credit them all for composure amidst pressure. Everyone had a role to play. Each one had the initiative to stand in when one failed  to deliver... And silently bit their lips when they were about to grumble.

These are the people I am blessed to journey with in God's appointed time. As every journey has an end so that a new adventure may begin, let me take this opportunity to thank you for everything.

eLearning in the Health Sciences

eLearning or the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to aid the teaching and learning process is the buzz word of the century. Everyone -- schools. students and even parents clamor for elearning as the way to become better students or more effective teachers. In the health sciences, elearning is seen as the way to go  global and be updated for the 21st century.

Substantial number of studies indeed show that elearning has the following positive effects: increased accessibility to information, better updating solutions, personalized training, better distribution, standardization of content,  better efficiency in achieving knowledge and skills, and offers opportunities for flexible teaching and learning while enhancing the possibilities for more individualized and self-directed learning in the medical education (Albarrak, 2011). But is it really the case?

What makes elearning effective depends on teachers' and students' use of it.  It is not elearning per se. eLearning has only the potential to accelerate and deepen the teaching and learning process, but using ICT alone does not make any difference. In the health sciences and in any other discipline of study, the effectiveness of elearning depends on the design of the lesson and the use of instructional methods. eLearning is just a medium and that technologies are merely vehicles that deliver instruction, and do not themselves influence student achievement the use of technologies, (Clark ,1983).

Erlyn Sana: the NTTCHP Dean

The first time I was meeting her, I thought she would be stern, but she was cheerful and casual.  She was very open and she didn't withhold --not one bit of  a-- chuckle.

She is not the typical college dean. Strict. Unrelenting. Dictating.

She listens. She asks. She concedes. She accepts and respects the differing points-of-view of others. (Although she also puts up a fight when she knows she's right -- so I heard).

That is the reason why anybody can just go in her office. Everybody can just butt in during meetings. All can even taste the food she is eating.

...and now  after two terms that she wants to retire from her  position, everybody says NO! that is if they can have their way to changing her decision.

NTTCHP is grateful for having her as dean and is grateful to God for being driven so crazy to many activities because of a dean that kept going.
